Der vorliegende Roman ist nach "Wer dann noch lachen kann" (ID-A 36/17) der Abschlussband der autobiografischen Trilogie von Birgit Vanderbeke. Sie erhält mit ihrem Mann die Möglichkeit, einen Sommer im Haus von Heinrich Böll in Irland zu verbringen. So gut wie abgeschnitten von menschlicher Kommunikation und Gesellschaft erinnert sie sich an ihre Jugend und die Personen und Ereignisse, die sie in dieser Zeit geprägt haben. Erinnertes wird mit dem Auge der Gegenwart neu bewertet, der Blick in die Zukunft ist zweifelnd angesichts der Tatsache, dass die Informationsflut der digitalen Welt uns oft abstumpfen, nicht mehr genau hinschauen und nachdenken lässt. So sagt sie: "Die Zukunft ist nicht glücklich, sondern digital". Viele philosophische Betrachtungen decken sich mit eigener Erlebniswelt beim Lesen. Allerdings störend wirken die Wiederholungen, z.B. wenn immer wieder betont wird, dass heute kaum ein Mensch noch Heinrich Böll, Ingrid und Gerhard Zwerenz oder Helga Novak kennt.
