Über etwa ein Jahrtausend prägten die Samurai Gesellschaft, Politik, Wirtschaft und Kultur Japans. Lange bildeten sie eine militärische Kaste und gehörten zur politischen Elite des Landes. Erst nach dem Ende des Bürgerkrieges 1615 büßten sie langsam ihre gehobene soziale Stellung ein und wurden in der Edo-Zeit zu "Kriegern ohne Krieg". Dieser Sammelband ist als Begleitbuch zur Ausstellung "Samurai", die im Historischen Museum der Pfalz Speyer zu sehen war, erschienen. In insgesamt 26 Artikeln beschäftigen sich die Autoren mit den Eigenheiten der Samurai-Kultur wie den spezifischen Waffen und der rituellen Selbsttötung (siehe auch: Stephen Turnbull "Geschichte der Samurai", BA 1/06; Wolfgang Schwentker "Die Samurai", BA 6/03). Mehrere Beiträge behandeln das Bild von den Samurai im modernen Japan, etwa in Schwertfilmen und Mangas. Andere beschreiben die spezifisch westliche Wahrnehmung der Krieger, beispielsweise in der kommerziellen Fotografie des späten 19. Jahrhunderts. Mit Glossar und Literaturverzeichnis, dazu zahlreiche Fotos der Exponate. Insgesamt empfehlenswert. (2)
