Le Catholicon , somme philologique du dominicain génois Giovanni Balbi (XIIIe siècle), comporte une grammaire (livres I-IV) et un lexique (livre V). L'étude des sources des livres III et IV vise à resituer cet ouvrage dans l'histoire de la tradition grammaticale et s'inscrit dans un mouvement de réévaluation de la compilation. L'introduction considère d'abord la diffusion du Catholicon jusqu'à la Renaissance. Elle présente ensuite son contexte de composition, à travers l'environnement social et intellectuel de G. Balbi dont elle considère les moyens, les méthodes et les ambitions, avant de donner un aperçu des productions grammaticales médiévales au sein desquelles il prend place. La recherche des sources engage trois niveaux d'analyse qui constituent autant de parties. Le premier a trait à la structure de la compilation : cela concerne l'articulation de trois grands objets d'études, mais aussi leur organisation interne : l’etymologia (les parties du discours et leurs accidents), la diasyntastica (la syntaxe) et les figures. Les choix structurels de G. Balbi sont estimés à l'aune de ceux de ses prédécesseurs et contemporains. Le deuxième niveau engage l'identification, la délimitation et la méthodologie des emprunts textuels (Priscien, Etonat, Bédé le Vénérable, grammaires en vers, etc.), qu'ils soient implicites ou explicites, théoriques ou illustratifs. Le dernier niveau, consacré aux sources lexicales du Catholicon, se concentre enfin sur les points de contact entre les livres (système de renvois internes) et donc entre grammaire et lexicographie (via Hugutio de Pise, Papias). The Catholicon, a philological summa by the Genoese Dominican Giovanni Balbi (13 century) comprises a grammar (books I-IV) and a lexicon (book V). The study of the sources for books III and IV aims to situate the work in the history of grammatical tradition and is part of a move to reassess the compilation. The introduction first considers how the Catholicon spread until the Renaissance. The context in which it was compiled is then presented through Balbi's social and intellectual environment. Balbi's means. methods and goals are analysed, and this is followed by an overview of other Medieval grammar works among which the Catholicon would take its place. The study of sources will produce three levels of analysis which will be dealt with in turn. The first level deals with the structure of the compendium, how the three main subjects are connected to one another, and also their internal structure : etymologia ( the parts of speech and their accidents), diasyntastica (syntax) and figures of speech. Balbi's structural choices are assessed in relation to those of his predecessors and contemporaries. The second level involves identifying and delineating borrowings from texts, and the methodology employed. The texts are by Priscian, Donatus, the Venerable Bede, grammar books in verse, etc., whether the borrowed references be implicit, explicit, theoretical or illustrative. The final level is devoted to lexical sources for Catholicon and focuses on links between the books ( through internal references), hence between grammar and lexicography (via Hugutio of Pisa, Papias). It questions how homogeneous and potentially innovative the sources were
