Zielgruppen von Streetwork werden oft ausgegrenzt bzw. es bestehen Beruehrungsaengste, sich auf diese Jugendlichen einzulassen. Problemlagen der Jugendlichen, die sich subjektiv ausdifferenzieren lassen und in ihrer individuell erlebten Tragweite stark differieren, koennen in gewisser Weise dennoch objektiviert werden. Um Erkenntnisse ueber tatsaechliche Denk- und Verhaltensweisen zu bekommen, um moeglichst nah an die Jugendlichen mit ihren Problemlagen heranzukommen, um moeglichst dichte Beschreibungen zu liefern, ist Streetwork eine geeignete Form, um in die Lebenswelten auch zu Forschungszwecken einzutreten. Schwierig erscheint der scheinbar bestehende Widerspruch, dass einerseits StreetworkerInnen als Grundlage einer gelingenden Arbeit eine vertrauensvolle Beziehung mit den Jugendlichen anstreben und auf der anderen Seite Wissenschaftlichkeit einen distanzierten Blick erfordert. Streetworker sind grundsaetzlich mit Widerspruechlichkeiten in ihrem Arbeitsfeld konfrontiert. Das doppelte Mandat der Auftragsgeber ist das beste Beispiel: zum einen werden Streetworker beauftragt, sich fuer Ruhe im Stadtteil einzusetzen; zum anderen sollen sie die Interessen der Jugendlichen vertreten, deren Interesse oft nicht Ruhe und Ordnung im Stadtteil sind.
