Content: The Rites Controversies in the Early Modern World is a collection of fourteen articles focusing on debates concerning the nature of “rites” raging in intellectual circles of Europe, Asia and America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The controversy started in Jesuit Asian missions where the method of accommodation, based on translation of Christianity into Asian cultural idioms, created a distinction between civic and religious customs. Civic customs were defined as those that could be included into Christianity and permitted to the new converts. However, there was no universal consensus among the various actors in these controversies as to how to establish criteria for distinguishing civility from religion. The controversy had not been resolved, but opened the way to radical religious scepticism. Contributors are: Claudia Brosseder, Michela Catto, Gita Dharampal-Frick, Pierre Antoine Fabre, Ana Carolina Hosne, Ronnie Po-Chia Hsia, Giuseppe Marcocci, Ovidiu Olar, Sabina Pavone, István Perczel, Nicholas Standaert, Margherita Trento, Guillermo Wilde and Ines G. Content: Drawing on original research covering different periods and spaces, this book sets out to appreciate the specific place of images in the history of evangelisation in the long modern period. How can we reconceptualise the functions of the visual mediation of the gospel message, both in terms of the production and reception of this message and in terms of its effective mediators, artists, religious, and cultural ambassadors? The contributions in this book offer multiple geographical and historical insights regarding the circulation of the image on the global scale of the Christianised world or the world in the process of being Christianised, from China to Iberia. Combining the contribution of historians and art historians, the authors highlight the points of intercultural encounter and tension around preaching, catechesis, devotional practices and the propagandistic use of images.00Through its aesthetic and social study of the image, and by examining the inner and outer borders of Europe and the mission lands, 'Eloquent Images' contributes significantly to the history of evangelisation, one of the major dynamics of the first European globalisation.

Content: Through the study of a collection of images from the ibero-american world the thesis develops a typological and morphological study of the visual rhetoric of one of the first globalized cultures. The task consists of an articulation between the micro-historical and the macro-historical analysis, that allows to enlighten the connections between global and local, and observe the commemorative function of those représentations of the colonial past. The approach is semiotic and iconological , but it is also anthropological. It tries to portray the diverse modalities of transformation of the images and their visual cross-breeding or hybridization in their passage from one continent to the other. The categorization and indexatioi with keywords allowed to identify certain visual framing devices of an image within the image and a séries of metaphors and symbols associated with the Eucharistie ritual. The Atlas configuration ,was the instrument used for the visualization of the results according to the basic structural oppositions identified during the process of classification

Content: This study turns on places and men. Places, that is graveyards in France from the XIXth century up to the present day, from the moment when the space araund parochial churches was left to community organization out of the city. Men that is how the relationship ta death has developed and expressed itself within and out of the limits of the cemetery. The first step of the process rests on a specific case : two graveyards in Thiers, Auvergne. This city is situated near a stone quarry known as Volvic stone which has long been used for gravestones, Therefore man y professionals can be met in this region. A socialogy of the style could be considered through the study of funerary catalogues. In this research are also observed some of the profound changes in behaviours and mentalities whch appear ,in the formal design of monuments and, up to recently, in the creation of micro-spaces within graveyards. ln a recent survey, two hundred people were questioned on how often they went to cemeteries, and their choice about their funeral and it showed the increase in cremation. Prompted by the desire to turn our eyes out of the grayards, we considered the existence of other places reserved to ashes or spontaneously selected for ashes scattering. Two events about death in a pubiic space bring a new element to study this area which could be considered as shifting. The first example is the group « Les Morts de la Rue » (People who die in the street), the other is about a social factor which is calling up death through road marking at the edge of the roads after a violent death. They complete the anthropological and cultural breaks we are dealing with
