Munich, January 1896 : the arrival of "Jugend - Illustrated Magazine for Art and Life" causes a kind of cultural, aesthetic and social landslide. An unheard-of large scale mixture of texts and images, it claims to be open for all styles, anti-Wilhelmine but patriotic, liberal thus anti-clerical. Its conceptual name synonymous with coutinuous revival and eternal youth forms its platform. On a first view, the number of angels even of singular appearance and irregularly entering the scene, is perplexing. An interdisciplinary approach, regarding these angelic figures who are, at the same time, close to and distant from their religious point of reference, under a double long-term focus - of history of art and of anthropology of religion - illumates their being appropriated for reasons of the cult of art, as well as the will of situating them in the centre of a modernism with vanguard and eschatological pretense
