Wie viele andere, inzwischen zumeist und zu Unrecht als randständig behandelte Ideenlieferanten in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland der 1970er- oder 1980er-Jahre ist auch die amerikanische Wissenschaftsjournalistin Marilyn Ferguson bislang noch kaum in den Genuss historiographischer Weihen gekommen. Im Gegensatz zu den Meisterdenkern der Frankfurter Schule oder liberalen und konservativen Cheftheoretikern sind Ferguson und andere Bezugsgrößen der „Gegenkultur“ und „alternativer“ Lebensweisen nach „1968“ selten zum Gegen-stand der Zeitgeschichtsschreibung geworden – zumal sich diese erst seit wenigen Jahren verstärkt Fragen der Religion zuwendet. Obwohl „Die sanfte Verschwörung“ in deutscher Übersetzung bis 1989 acht Auflagen erreichte und vom „Spiegel“ sehr treffend als „New-Age-Bibel“ bezeichnet wurde, findet sich in keiner der großen Überblicksdarstellungen zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik auch nur ein kurzer Verweis auf dieses Vademekum esoterischer Praktiken und Diskurse.
