Dieser Band enthält die überarbeiteten Fassungen von Vorträgen, die auf einer Tagung an der Universität Jena am 15. und 16. Dezember 2006 gehalten wurden. Themenschwerpunkte waren die Kommunikation in der Frühen Neuzeit im Allgemeinen und die Kommunikation unter Gelehrten im Besonderen. Die letztgenannte Kommunikationsform erfolgte auf unterschiedlichen Wegen, die zumindest unter drei Gesichtspunkten zusammengefaßt werden können: Zum einen wurden Informationen mittels Briefen ausgetauscht, zum anderen über wissenschaftliche Periodika und andere Publikationen (z.B. Sendschreiben) und zum dritten durch Begegnungen etwa bei Reisen und persönlichen Kontakten. Die Beiträge nähern sich dem Themenkomplex auf programmatische Weise sowie auf der Grundlage detaillierter Einzelstudien.
