Frühjahr 1958: Ingeborg Bachmann bringt gerade das Hörspiel Der gute Gott von Manhattan auf Sendung. Max Frisch, in dieser Zeit mit Inszenierungen von Biedermann und die Brandstifter beschäftigt, schreibt der "jungen Dichterin", wie begeistert er von ihrem Hörspiel ist. Mit Bachmanns Antwort im Juni 1958 beginnt ein Briefwechsel, der - vom Kennenlernen bis lange nach der Trennung - in fast 300 überlieferten Schriftstücken Zeugnis ablegt vom Leben, Lieben und Leiden eines der bekanntesten Paare der deutschsprachigen Literatur. Die kommentierten Briefe zeigen einmal mehr, dass Leben und Werk nicht zu trennen sind. „In der Tat rücken die Briefe, die von der Literaturkritik zurecht als eine Sensation gefeiert werden, einiges zurecht, zeigen sie doch, dass das Liebesverhältnis zwischen Frisch und Bachmann, so verzehrend, intensiv und im Nachhinein auch bewegend es gewesen sein mochte, von Beginn an als offene Beziehung angelegt war. Und dass Frisch keinesfalls das kalte Monster war, das die Beziehung im Nachhinein gegen den Willen Bachmanns literarisch ausgeschlachtet hat. Die Briefe sind stilistisch fein und sprachlich wendungsreich. Ob sie allerdings Lust darauf machen, sich noch einmal intensiver mit dem Werk der beiden Autoren auseinanderzusetzen, mag dahingestellt sein.
