Besucht man heute das Gelände, auf dem sich ab 1940 das nationalsozialistische Konzentrationslager Gusen befand, das lange Zeit größte KZ auf österreichischem Gebiet, mag der Anblick überraschen: Das ehemalige Lagergelände, das direkt an der Straße zwischen Linz und Mauthausen liegt, ist nun eine idyllische Siedlung mit Einfamilienhäusern, kleinen Gärten und Heckenzäunen, durchkreuzt von ruhigen Straßen mit lieblichen Namen: Spielplatzstraße, Parkstraße, Blumenstraße. Einzig ein monumentaler Betonbau am Rand der Siedlung stört die Idylle und erinnert daran, was zwischen dem 25. Mai 1940 und dem 5. Mai 1945 an diesem Ort geschehen ist.
