»Aktiv gegen Streß« – mit dieser Schlagzeile informierte »Der Scheibenwischer«, die Werkszeitung der IG Metall für die Beschäftigten der Daimler-Benz AG und der Mercedes-Benz AG am Standort Stuttgart, im Mai 1990 über die laufenden Tarifverhandlungen. Arbeitstempo und Leistungsdruck nähmen rasant zu, diesem Trend müsse man gemeinsam entgegenwirken. Dazu habe die IG Metall für die Tarifrunde ein »Anti-Streß-Paket« geschnürt, in dessen Mittelpunkt die Forderung nach einer 35-Stunden-Woche »für mehr freie Zeit und Lebensfreude« stehe. Die insgesamt acht Seiten des Hefts, das vor allem an die Angestellten in den Verwaltungszentralen des Konzerns verteilt wurde, informierten über Probleme wie Personalabbau, psychische Gründe für steigende Fehlzeiten und drohende Verschlechterungen der Arbeitsbedingungen durch das von der Unternehmensberatung McKinsey eingeführte Programm zur »Optimierung der Gemeinkosten« (OGK). Hervorgehobene Kästchen definierten zentrale Begriffe der Artikel, darunter »Streß«. Mit Verweis auf das seit 1976 in vielen Auflagen erschienene Buch »Phänomen Streß« von Frederic Vester wurden in knappen Worten medizinischer Hintergrund und psychisch-soziale Folgen der modernen Industriegesellschaft für den »natürlichen Verteidigungsmechanismus des Körpers« zusammengefasst.
