Ziel der experimentell-empirischen Untersuchung ist die Überprüfung der didaktischen Alltagstheorie «Wer viel liest, verbessert seine Rechtschreibkompetenz». Im schulischen Alltag ist die Vorstellung von einer wechselseitigen Förderung der Fertigkeiten Lesen und (Recht-)Schreiben immer noch präsent. Die Ergebnisse der Arbeit zeigen jedoch, dass Schreiben keine Reproduktion von Gelesenem, sondern eine eigenständige (schrift-)sprachliche Fertigkeit ist. Die Widerlegung des didaktischen Mythos ist nicht nur aus wissenschaftstheoretischen Gründen von weit reichender Bedeutung, sondern verlangt eine konsequente Umorientierung der fachdidaktischen Vermittlung an den Universitäten und eine Umgestaltung des schriftsprachlichen Curriculums.
