Die Arbeit vergleicht die im Herbst 2000 am Markt befindlichen Software-Produkte zur Produktion von Mehrkanalton auf nativer Basis. Alle betrachteten Programme sind auf der Windows-Plattform ausführbar. Einbezogen sind Surround-Mixer, Surround-Panner und Surround-Encoder. Alle Vergleiche und Betrachtungen beziehen sich hauptsächlich auf die Fähigkeiten der Programme "Surround" zu erzeugen und zu verarbeiten. Im Hinblick auf das in der Tonabteilung der Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen "Konrad Wolf" viel genutzte Pro Tools System wird dessen Software-Version 5.1. (Beta), welche zu der Zeit der Entstehung dieser Arbeit noch nicht erhältlich war, in einer Preview vorgestellt. Ein Vergleich zwischen Pro Tools und den nativen Systemen wird vorgenommen. Eine Einführung in die Begriffe und aktuellen Technologien der Mehrkanaltontechnik ist in den Anfang integriert.
