Content: The 1994 edition of Personality Disorders and the Five-Factor Model of Personality has been a definitive resource for researchers and clinicians interested in the applications of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) of personality disorders. Since new empirical research has been conducted, and key theoretical developments have occurred, this edition updates information from the 1st edition and offers 9 new chapters. A new chapter by the editors presents a comprehensive summary of 55 empirical studies published since 1994 on the relationship of the FFM to personality disorder symptoms. Additional new chapters cover: the history and conceptual background of the FFM; five-factor translations of DSM personality disorders; empirical findings on the structure and symptomatology of personality disorders from the five-factor perspective; application of the FFM to a variety of patient populations; the use of standardized instruments to assess personality; and the FFM's usefulness in tailoring treatment to the personality dimensions of particular patients.
Content: This 2nd edition reprints 15 chapters from the 1st edition with updated references and reframes their emphases in terms of the empirical and conceptual advances that have occurred in the last 5 or 6 years. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved).

Content: "This is a difficult yet also exciting time for the diagnosis and classification of personality disorders. The American Psychiatric Association is in the process of constructing the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. In a survey of members of the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders and the Association for Research on Personality Disorders, 80% of respondents indicated that they felt that "personality disorders are better understood as variants of normal personality than as categorical disease entities" (Bernstein, Iscan, Maser, & the Boards of Directors of the Association for Research in Personality Disorders and the International Society for the Study of Personality Disorders, 2007, p. 542). The DSM-5 Personality and Personality Disorders Work Group appears to be taking a number of steps to embrace this conceptual position, shifting toward a five-factor model (FFM) conceptualization of personality disorder. The substantial shift of DSM-5 toward the FFM has been the result of a considerable amount of research that occurred prior to the first and second editions of the current text (Costa & Widiger, 1994, 2002) as well as even more research that has occurred since the publication of those editions. Persons familiar with these two prior editions will notice that many new chapters have been included in this latest edition, reflecting the substantial amount of empirical and clinical work that has occurred since the 2002 edition. We attempt to provide in this third edition a reasonably comprehensive summary and representation of this empirical and clinical literature"--Chapter. Edition: 2. ed.
    ISBN: 1-57230-827-3
Content: "Now in a revised and expanded second edition, this book offers an up-to-date statement of current knowledge on personality and adult development. Presented are compelling updates and refinements to the argument advanced in the original volume - that personality traits remain remarkably stable after age 30, exerting a significant influence on individual adaptation and the life course. Describing the results of ongoing cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, Robert R. McCrae and Paul T. Costa, Jr., examine how traits can best be conceptualized and measured and trace their stability over time and across cultures. In the process, they provide a highly accessible introduction to the Five-Factor Model of personality." "The volume begins with a critical review of theories of adult development, focusing on the central question of whether personality changes or remains the same as the individual grows older
Content: Delineating the principles of trait psychology, the book demonstrates how the Five-Factor Model can incorporate virtually all of the traits identified in common language and in scientific theories. This breadth makes the model an ideal tool for assessing personality systematically and tracing patterns of growth or decline across the lifespan. Marshaling a wealth of empirical data, and carefully considering the strengths and limitations of different research methodologies, the book provides a thorough account of what happens to personality as men and women age. Updated throughout with new ideas, findings, and interpretations, the second edition includes a new chapter on cross-cultural research
Content: An additional new chapter presents a comprehensive theory of personality grounded in the Five-Factor Model, addressing crucial questions about how individual characteristics affect our experiences, actions, and sense of self." "Written in a clear, jargon-free tone, this book contains much of value for students, teachers, and researchers in personality, social, and developmental psychology. It also belongs on the shelves of clinicians interested in adult development and aging. It serves as an informative text for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in adult or lifespan development, personality theory and research, and personality development."--BOOK JACKET

Content: In this authoritative edited volume, leading researchers and clinicians explore the premise that the Five-Factor Model (FFM) of personality is the most useful and comprehensive taxonomy for describing personality and for assessing and describing personality disorders. Although the FFM has already been productively applied to the study of normal personality, it is now proposed as an alternative, conceptually useful framework for understanding personality disorders. /// This book provides a comprehensive examination of both diagnostic and [psychotherapeutic and other] treatment issues of personality disorders, includes practical guidance for using standardized instruments to assess personality, and underscores the utility of the FFM's dimensional approach for understanding personality and personality disorders. Content: "The Adult Years: Continuity and Change"--The baby-boom generation is now entering middle age and is only two decades away from the retirement years. The fastest-growing segment of our population consists of those over age 85. We are living longer and there are more of us every year. Is psychology ready to serve an aging and aged population? Is the training available in geropsychology adequate? Do we know enough about not just psychology but also about biology and the social processes with which the older adult is most concerned? The chapters in this volume address these and other questions of importance in psychological practice with the older adult. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved)
