Im Buch wird aufgezeigt, wie Aktivität und Partizipation von Menschen mit intellektueller Beeinträchtigung im Wohnheimalltag möglich ist. Ziel des Autors ist es, über eine ausführliche Darstellung und Beurteilung des Selbstbestimmungsbegriffes die Brücke hin zum neuen Konzept der «Aktiven Partizipation» zu schlagen. Mit Hilfe der sogenannten Konversationsanalyse wertet er ca. 90 Stunden Videomaterial aus, das über Kamerabrillen erhoben wurde. Er zeigt auf, dass Aktivität und Partizipation möglich wird, wenn zwischen den Menschen mit intellektueller Beeinträchtigung und den Betreuungspersonen Kooperationsverhältnisse gelingen. Diese Kooperationsverhältnisse werden von ihm systematisch erfasst, illustriert und detailliert beschrieben.
