Nach lange währenden Kämpfen hat sich Benjamin Martin 1763 in Süd-Carolina angesiedelt, eine Familie gegründet und eine prosperierende Farm aufgebaut. Doch die englischen Kolonialmächte setzen mit immer neuen Gesetzen die Steuerlast auf ein kaum noch erträgliches Maß. Bald beginnen Siedler, sich Gedanken über einen Aufstand zu machen.
