    Edition: 1. publ.
    ISBN: 0631206582 , 0631206590
Content: Builds on a collaborative, international project sponsored by UNESCO to offer an overview of social and cultural anthropology. The volume offers a vision of the "militant middle ground" between theory and practice, humanistic and scientific approaches, and symbolic and materialist perspectives. Rejecting conventional layout, noted anthropologist Michael Herzfeld brings his collaborators -- specialists in their various fields -- into a broader conversation about the ways in which social and cultural anthropology can illuminate aspects of the human condition that less intimate approaches cannot reveal. Also addresses the theoretical as well as ethical commitments that have enabled anthropologists to play a leading role in the critique of racism and other forms of intolerance. Herzfeld examines topics ranging from mass media, environmental and development issues, kinship and suffering in transnational settings, the politics of both the nation-state and the local community, the arts, cosmologies of science as well as religion, to the relationship between social life and history. Readers will find their eyes opened to the complexities of culture and society at a time of vastly intensified communication and contact, and will discover that anthropology offers unique insights into both the common predicaments of humankind and the specific ways that different groups have developed to address those predicaments.

Content: This collection consists of of 94 English language documents and one translation from the German. While the time coverage is vast (from 800 B.C. to the 1980s) and there is good historical depth, the focus is primarily on rural Greek society in the latter half of the 20th century, particularly in the mainland regions of Boeotia, Piraeus, Kokinia, Zagor, Epiros, and central Macedonia and the major Aegean or Greek islands of Crete, Rhodes, Lesbos, and the Cyclades (Tinos, Anafi). Also included are comprehensive studies on the Sarakatsani nomads of the Zagori, Epirus, Thessaly, and central Greece regions. Several documents deal with the city of Athens

Content: In Cultural Intimacy, anthropologist Michael Herzfeld asks why officials treat certain features of national culture as disreputable, and why at the same time it is these features through which the nation-state often secures the loyalty of its citizens. To probe this "cultural intimacy" he develops an approach, which he calls "social poetics" that opens up the tensions between official models of national culture and the lived experience of ordinary citizens
Content: Cultural Intimacy draws on the author's own extensive fieldwork in Greece, as well as on a wide range of comparisons from the United States, Africa, Western Europe, and elsewhere. Herzfeld explores many topics - from sheep-thieves to flight attendants, from the banality of polite chit-chat to the divine vengeance invoked against perjury, and from the personal styles of coffeehouse and barroom to the politics of academia. In all these arenas he finds revealing tensions between the formal idealization of collective self-recognition
