    Abstract: Hudson Bay, at the southern margin of the Arctic Ocean, receives nearly one-third of Canada’s river discharge and approximately 5.5 Tg of riverine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) annually. Riverine DOC fluxes to Hudson Bay are expected to increase with climate change, but how this increase will influence the biogeochemistry of the coastal waters is largely unknown. In particular, the fate of riverine DOC that enters Hudson Bay during the dark, frozen winter period (roughly January to April) is poorly known despite high discharge from the large, regulated rivers of Hudson and James Bays at that time. Few studies have assessed the degradability of riverine DOC transported in winter anywhere across the Arctic, leaving unanswered questions regarding the impact of riverine DOC on the Arctic carbon budget, CO2 fluxes, and local food webs. Here, we assessed the biodegradability of DOC in riverine and coastal waters of southern Hudson Bay in late winter using 45-day incubation experiments. We found 24%–60% of the DOC in the rivers and on average 21% of the DOC in the immediate coastal waters to be biodegradable. Differences in biodegradability appeared to depend on properties of the rivers/watersheds and physical and biochemical processes in the aquatic environments. DOC biodegradability correlated strongly with DOC concentration, which was higher during winter than summer in all studied rivers and higher in the Nelson and Hayes Rivers, draining the Hudson Bay Lowlands than in most previously studied large rivers of the Arctic watershed. The Nelson River, regulated for hydropower production, had the highest winter DOC concentrations and most degradable DOC. The high biodegradability of Hudson Bay riverine DOC in late winter and high concentrations and fluxes of riverine DOC at that time imply strong leverage for future increases in DOC fluxes to impact the carbon cycle of these coastal waters.

    Abstract: During a research expedition in Hudson Bay in June 2018, vast areas of thick ( & gt;10 m), deformed sediment-laden sea ice were encountered unexpectedly in southern Hudson Bay and presented difficult navigation conditions for the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Amundsen. An aerial survey of one of these floes revealed a maximum ridge height of 4.6 m and an average freeboard of 2.2 m, which corresponds to an estimated total thickness of 18 m, far greater than expected within a seasonal ice cover. Samples of the upper portion of the ice floe revealed that it was isothermal and fresh in areas with sediment present on the surface. Fine-grained sediment and larger rocks were visible on the ice surface, while a pronounced sediment band was observed in an ice core. Initial speculation was that this ice had formed in the highly dynamic Nelson River estuary from freshwater, but δ18O isotopic analysis revealed a marine origin. In southern Hudson Bay, significant tidal forcing promotes both sediment resuspension and new ice formation within a flaw lead, which we speculate promotes the formation of this sediment-laden sea ice. Historic satellite imagery shows that sediment-laden sea ice is typical of southern Hudson Bay, varying in areal extent from 47 to 118 km2 during June. Based on an average sediment particle concentration of 0.1 mg mL–1 in sea ice, an areal extent of 51,924 km2 in June 2018, and an estimated regional end-of-winter ice thickness of 1.5 m, we conservatively estimated that a total sediment load of 7.8 × 106 t, or 150 t km–2, was entrained within sea ice in southern Hudson Bay during winter 2018. As sediments can alter carbon concentrations and light transmission within sea ice, these first observations of this ice type in Hudson Bay imply biogeochemical impacts for the marine system.

    Abstract: Goal. The purpose of the work is to develop an aerial photography complex based on a DJI S1000 helicopter UAV for aerial photography, which includes a laser scanner (LS) and a digital camera (CPC). Method. For several decades, aerial photography has been an effective tool for geodetic works, geophysical surveys and various types of monitoring. On the other hand, the use of not only digital imaging, but also laser scanning of objects allows to maximize the accuracy of obtaining the coordinates of points on the ground and eliminate such a process as plan-height binding in the field, which occupies more than 80 % of field work that is, much cheaper the process of creating cartographic materials. In addition, the use of laser scanners on board unmanned aerial vehicles helps to solve a number of scientific and applied problems in various fields, such as engineering research, environmental monitoring, landscape research and modeling, construction, architecture, archeology and more. Comprehensive study, research and monitoring of the environment involves the availability and use of highly efficient modern technologies, special software for data processing and analysis and qualified human resources. Aerial laser scanners are the latest high-precision technology for obtaining data about the object by noncontact method and have a multi-purpose purpose. I have been actively using them in the world since the early 2000s. They have a number of advantages over traditional aerial photography. Drugs are manufactured by the world’s leading companies, they are available on the market and are in great demand among foreign specialists. Unfortunately, in Ukraine, airborne laser scanners are used in limited quantities to perform special tasks with the involvement of foreign experts. In this area we have a significant lag compared to other European countries. Therefore, the acquisition and application of such a software and technology complex and UAV will help solve and accelerate the solution of many important scientific and applied problems in Ukraine, as well as increase the potential, opportunities and prestige in domestic and world science and practice. Results. A mock-up model of installation and implementation of Velodyne VLP-16 on a DJI S1000 helicopter UAV has been developed. The authors analyzed the known systems and created the best option for connecting and connecting the elements, which made it possible to simplify the layout of the devices, which in turn made it possible to reduce the cost of the proposed complex. Scientific novelty and practical significance. For the first time in Ukraine, a method of installing a helicopter-type UAV was developed and proposed. With the help of an airborne laser scanning system installed on board an unmanned aerial vehicle of helicopter type it is possible to solve a number of important scientific and applied tasks, such as: monitoring the technical condition of large and hard-to-reach structures – nuclear, hydro and thermal power plants, power lines, etc. ; monitoring the condition of roads, detecting places of surface damage and other dangerous places in order to prevent car accidents; detection of damage to forests and agricultural lands; observation and prevention of landslides in mountains and industrial quarries, places of soil erosion; monitoring of water resources, changes in contours and heights of the coastal strip; detection of roof defects, deformations, wall cracks on highrise buildings for architectural measurements, 3D modeling, documentation and preservation of cultural heritage sites; assistance in archaeological exploration to identify archaeological sites and study artifacts. In addition, peripheral drugs can be installed on other moving objects (cars, railcars, boats, etc.) and scanning from fixed bases in stationary conditions.

    Abstract: Goal. The purpose of this paper is to create a tourist GIS of the Sumy oblast using cartographic materials and remote sensing data, as well as the development of new tourist routes in the Sumy oblast by means of modern geoinformation technologies and ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and AllTrails software. Method. The main stages of the creation of Sumy oblast tourist GIS were: search and analysis of the of input materials, necessary for the creation of a tourist GIS; create of the structural block diagram of research works; Satellite image processing, in particular the creation of synthesized images and the use of the Pansharpening technique for a better interpretation of objects; building a digital elevation model for tourist GIS; processing of cartographic materials in ArcGIS; creation of a graphical and attributive database; classification and layer-by-layer data visualization; development of tourism routes by means of ArcGIS Online and AllTrails web applications; analysis of the created of Sumy oblast tourist GIS. Results. As a result of the research: a structural diagram of the main stages of the research has been developed; a graphical-attributive database with information about tourist objects was organized; created a digital elevation model based on SRTM data of Sumy oblast, made the topographic basis of GIS; by means of the ArcGIS 10.3 software a tourist GIS of the Sumy oblast was created, which includes 255 tourist objects of various profiles; using web applications ArcGIS Online and AllTrails, 5 automobile tourist routes with a total length of 1234 kmand 1 pedestrian route 11 kmlong, which pass through the territory of Sumy oblast, have been developed. Scientific novelty. The novelty of the research lies in the methodology for creating a Sumy oblast tourist GIS, the development of new excursion tourist routes and objects, and their visualization based on the use of cartographic materials and satellite images by means of modern GIS, in particular ArcGIS 10.3, ArcGIS Online and AllTrails. Practical value. The research results can be used in the tourism industry, where the priority task is to provide tourists with modern highquality overview, cognitive and cartographic materials, including traditional maps, schematic maps, booklets, and digital maps, 3D models, web applications, audio, video and virtual tours, which are created using the latest digital and GIS technologies, as well as to popularize the tourist and recreational potential of the Sumy oblast among the population.

    Abstract: The Hudson Bay system is undergoing climate-driven changes in sea ice and freshwater inflow and has seen an increase in winter river inflow since the 1960s due in part to flow regulation for hydropower production. Southeast Hudson Bay and adjacent James Bay are at the forefront of these changes, with more than 1-month shortening of the season of sea ice cover as defined using satellite data, increases in winter inflow from the regulated La Grande River complex, and changes in coastal ice and polynya behavior described by Belcher Islands’ Inuit. In summer, there is a fresh coastal domain in southeast Hudson Bay fueled by river runoff and sea ice melt. To investigate winter oceanographic conditions and potential interactions between runoff and ice melt or brine in southeast Hudson Bay, we initiated the first winter study of the shallow waters surrounding the Belchers, collecting conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiles and conductivity-temperature (CT) time series using under-ice moorings, and collecting water samples and ice cores during four campaigns between January 2014 and March 2015. Tandem measurements of salinity and δ 18 O were made for the water and ice samples to discriminate between freshwater sources (river runoff and sea ice melt). We find that southeast Hudson Bay, and particularly the nearshore domain southeast of the Belchers, is distinguished in winter by the presence of river water and strong surface stratification, which runs counter to expectations for a system in which local freshwater remains frozen on land until spring freshet (May–June) and sea ice growth is adding brine to surface waters. The amount of river water around the Belcher Islands increased significantly from fall through to late winter according to δ 18 O records of ice. The accumulation of river water in surface waters during the winter is directly associated with an accumulation of brine, which considerably exceeds the capacity of local ice formation to produce brine. We therefore infer that brine is advected into the study area together with river water, and that interplay between these properties establishes and maintains the level of surface stratification throughout winter. With reference to a NEMO ocean model simulation of winter circulation in the study area, we propose a conceptual model in which winter river inflow into James Bay drives the northward transport of both river water and brine captured near the surface, with reductions in brine-driven deep convection in the area’s flaw leads. While past changes in winter oceanographic conditions and sea ice cannot be reconstructed from the few available scientific data, the presence of significant runoff in winter in southeast Hudson Bay implies heightened sensitivity to delayed freeze-up under a warmer climate, which will have the effect of reducing brine early in the winter, also promoting increased stratification and river plume transport.
