Content: British Petroleum (BP) was among the first major oil companies to commercialise solar power technologies and was also one of the largest fully integrated photovoltaics companies. Follow-ing the oil crises of the 1970s and as part of its diversification strategy, BP built up its sub-sidiary BP Solar, which later became a central element in BP’s corporate social responsibility and sustainability activities. But in 2011, BP Solar was shut down. However, before this the company did indeed have a “solar business case” and this paper shows how this business case was realised and how BP tried to keep it going. Sources used were BP’s annual reports from 1998 to 2011, which were studied by means of software-supported text analysis. For the re-construction of the strategic drivers and business model innovations behind BP’s solar busi-ness, a framework from sustainability management research was employed. It was found that an accommodative solar strategy was applied by the company and implemented through two business model innovation paths, the optimisation of module manufacturing combined with completely new distribution models.

Content: This paper proposes a conceptual integration of business models into contexts of corporate sustainability. A business model can be interpreted as the blueprint of an organization's business logic. It can serve as starting point to investigate first, if business cases for sustainability can be realized under industry- and firm-specific circumstances and second, if an organization's resources and activities are configured in a way that allows for creating value on the private and public level. Therefore, conventional business model perspectives have to be enhanced through accentuation and extension to integrate sustainability aspects. After discussing some general business model rhetoric which can be found in corporate sustainability contexts, a promising conventional business model concept is introduced and further developed to propose a generic template for business models for sustainabilityʺ. This conceptual work is guided by the following principle: A business model for sustainability is the blueprint of a company's business logic which internalizes the business case for sustainability. The intention of this paper is threefold: First, identify currently perceived intersections of corporate sustainability and business models. Second, generic business model templates for issues of corporate sustainability are rare; a gap that shall be filled by moving from rhetoric to a generic template for business models for sustainability. Third, open up a new field which may be labelled strategic business model managementʺ.

Content: This paper develops the business models for sustainability innovation (BMfSI) framework. It defines innovation-based business cases as the major goal of sustainable entrepreneurs and identifies their most important barriers, i.e. barriers to profiting from sustainability innovations. A common business model concept is linked to these issues, and its artificial and socially constructed nature, which makes it a multi-functional device, is discussed. Based on these theoretical foundations, the BMfSI framework integrates the main results from the underlying doctoral research project. The framework defines four basic interfaces at the intersections of the most important concepts and issues related to the idea of business models for sustainability innovation: the sustainability innovation, business case, public policy, and financing interfaces. These are connected to the literature in the respective fields and illustrated with findings from different empirical studies on the solar photovoltaic industry. On a general level, the BMfSI framework helps in structuring the emerging sustainable entrepreneurship research with a particular focus on innovation and business models

Content: It is often overlooked that British Petroleum (BP) was among the commercial solar energy pioneers and one of the largest fully integrated photovoltaics companies. Following the 1970s oil crises, BP built its subsidiary BP Solar. But in 2011, in the wake of changing policy regimes, falling module prices and fierce competition, BP Solar was closed. However, before these developments occurred the company had a “solar business case.” This paper shows how this business case was realised and how BP tried to maintain it. BP's annual reporting from 1998 to 2011 was studied by means of software-supported text analysis. Content: Researchers and practitioners highlight the importance of business for progress in sustainable consumption and production (SCP). In this context business models are discussed as meta factors that can support the adoption of cleaner products and processes, sustainable supply chains and further contributions towards SCP. The article is about business model innovation and the creation of private and public benefits. From a strategy perspective business model innovation is an approach to design, implement and change business models to create and secure competitive advantage. It is supposed that business models can also support eco-innovations. If companies subscribe to sustainability strategies, their business models can help bridging technological innovations, organizational aspects and market positions. Furthermore, the business model itself can become subject to eco-innovation and thus support the realization of business cases for sustainability. The article follows a theoretical, deductive approach. A conceptual framework is developed that combines sustainability strategies, eco-innovation, the role of business models and pivotal ideas about value creation with regard to private and public benefits. This approach is discussed as essential driver of eco-innovations. Starting with sufficiency, efficiency and consistency strategies helps identifying primary challenges and is assumed to be the obvious first step towards a broader research agenda on ‘business models for sustainability’. The framework includes definitions such as ‘business model eco-innovation’ and ‘extended customer value’ and propositions about how these concepts interrelate. It allows for developing further theoretical and empirical research topics. The review shows that the state-of-the-art literature is far from offering such an agenda
