Seit seiner Gründung 1968 hat es Berichte an den "Club of Rome" zu den drängendsten ökologischen und klimapolitischen Themen gegeben (vgl. zuletzt "2052 - Der neue Bericht an den Club of Rome", ID-A 47/12, oder U. Bardi: "Der geplünderte Planet", ID-A 31/13). C. Martin, Schweizer Biologe, Direktor des WWF International (1993-2005) und Regenwaldexperte ("Die Regenwälder Westafrikas", BA 2/90), begründet hier seine gedämpft optimistische Prognose zum Erhalt der tropischen Regenwälder. Vom historischen Rückblick (Entwaldung in früheren Jahrhunderten, erste Versuche von Datenerhebungen) über die konkreten aktuellen Walddegradierungen (unterschieden nach Regionen) und Umnutzungen, inklusive der entsprechenden Grundursachen, gelangt er abschließend zu einer "bescheidenen Hoffnung": der Wiederbewaldung in den Randregionen. "Boxen" und "Expertenmeinung" (grau unterlegt) bieten Zusatzinformationen, ebenso Farbfotos und spezielle Schemata.
