; CNPq ; This research aimed to understand the impact of reference groups on the sacrifice perceived by the consumer. Therefore, the thesis emphasized groups typologies, the ways of influence exerted by them, the impact factors they possess, as well as the social identity that groups help to form, besides turning to the understanding of the elements that make up the sacrificial perception of the individual and the role played by the reference groups in establishing it. The research had a basic qualitative nature, operationalized from the selection of a consumer profile that had the fitness lifestyle, characterized by the search for a fit body that communicates health, beauty and fitness, involving consumption activities based on diets, physical exercises, and even cosmetic surgery. Twenty-four consumers participated in the data construction process based on interview and photo collection (image elicitation) techniques. The generated texts and the collected illustrations were examined, respectively, through Thematic Analysis and Semiotic Image Analysis. The results showed that the reference groups have a normative and informative impact on the painful and conchegative spheres of an abdicating action driven by a compensatory objective that establishes the sacrificial perception. In fact, these same groupings play certain social roles that contribute to the sacrificing action to occur, to remain or not to be practiced, encouraging or inhibiting it, educating or confronting people about their choices and consumption behaviors. Moreover, the groups were permeable and, therefore, permissible regarding the mobility of their members, indicating that the emphasis on a given group quality will determine their reference denomination, also attributing a characteristic of mutability to the social impact of the groups on consumer sacrificial perception. Such collectivities can even be typified beyond the categories of affiliation, aspiration and avoidance, identifying in this thesis a fourth grouping called prescription group, bringing theoretical and managerial implications in the field of consumer behavior. Finally, considering the fitness lifestyle, it was possible to identify the changes in consumption behaviors adopted by individuals, capable of generating body and mental transformations, remaking the identity of the subject from the choice of a lifestyle that brings to the corporeal the premise of adaptation. Thus, it was noticed that individuals seek adjustments and even identity conversions from consumption, affecting themselves and relationships with their social groups. Thus, acquiring, using or avoiding certain goods and services reflects the search for a social demarcation that helps in the reformulation of identity.
