    Content: The Garo live in the East and West Garo Hills District of the state of Meghalaya in India. The Garo is a major aboriginal group of this region of India and is divided into nine subtribes: Awe, Chisak, Matchi-Dual, Matabeng, Ambeng, Ruga-Chibox, Gara-Ganching, Atong, and the Megam. This file includes 33 documents that cover the period from the end of the 18th century up to 1990. However, most of the historical references go only as far back as the beginning of British occupation in the 1870s.
