Vassa Zheleznova (Inna Tshurikova) is a solid tradeswoman. She has an iron grip on her household, a few years before the 1917 revolution. When her husband gets involved in a scandal she forces him to commit suicide to safe the honor and capital of the family. After his death she becomes even more rigid where it concerns her family. The family capital is what counts most. When her Jewish daughter in law Rachel (Valentina Telichkina) arrives from Switzerland with the sad news that Vassa's son is dying, Rachel wants to take her own son back home. But Vassa wants to keep her grandson with her and this causes a painful conflict between both mothers. But this dilemma is only the beginning of an even greater disaster. Even Vassa cannot control the powers unleashed during the revolutions of 1917. (Moskwood)
