In der Kriegskinderforschung wird die Abwesenheit des biologischen Vaters und das Aufwachsen nur bei der biologischen Mutter als problematisch für die psychische Entwicklung von Kindern postuliert. Der abwesende biologische Vater rückt ins Zentrum, mit ihm steht und fällt die psychische Gesundheit des Kindes. Rafaela Schmid etabliert eine neue Reflexionsebene im Fachdiskurs um (kriegsbedingte) ›Vaterlosigkeit‹. Sie nähert sich der Problematik exemplarisch mittels einer hermeneutischen Lektüre und Interpretation der Fachliteratur über sogenannte ›Besatzungskinder‹. Darin enthaltene Verkürzungen psychoanalytischer Konzepte werden durch eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Stellung des Vaters in der Theorie Freuds sichtbar, was in der Folge eine Dezentrierung des biologischen Vaters möglich macht. So kann das gängige eindimensionale und von patriarchalen Strukturen bestimmte Narrativ der ›Vaterlosigkeit‹ als Mangelzustand herausgefordert werden.
