Due to its ease of use, low radiation exposure and versatile measurement parameters DXA is a practicable method to measure body composition. This study examines the influence of supportive medical accessories on the individual parameters of a DXA examination by means of an animal model for premature babies. Using a high-resolution scan mode (small animal mode), it was shown that supportive medical accessories significantly alter the measured values of a DXA examination. Selected medical accessories (e.g. CPAP system, tube, cannula) were placed to the test animals in the experimental field in various combinations that are commonly used in clinical practice. As a result, the measured values for bone mineral content, fat and total mass increased. The values for the lean body mass decreased. In addition, the ratio of fat to lean mass to fat mass seems to shift. It was also found that the software does not seem to measure accurately at low weights of the animals. When using the DXA method for premature babies in clinical practice, the effects mentioned above should be taken into consideration.
