Im Frühjahr 1942 besucht die gebürtige Ostfriesin Hannelore Wolff mit ihren Freundinnen eine Schule in Berlin, als sie die furchtbare Nachricht ereilt, dass ihre Mutter und die Brüder durch die Gestapo deportiert werden sollen. Hannelore fällt die folgenschwere Entscheidung, ihre Familie auf diesem Weg zu begleiten. In den nächsten Jahren übersteht sie die Schrecken von insgesamt acht Arbeits- und Konzentrationslagern. Obwohl sie vom Tod und von unerträglichem Leid umgeben ist, verliebt sie sich in einen polnischen Kriegsgefangenen. Beide, Hannelore und Dick, schöpfen Hoffnung, als sie einen Platz auf Schindlers Liste ergattern. Aber die versprochene Rettung ist noch nicht besiegelt und Hannelore findet sich plötzlich allein vor den Toren von Auschwitz wieder. Mehr als nur eine Lebenserinnerung, zeigt diese beeindruckende wie erschreckende Geschichte, wie auch in den grausamsten Zeiten Liebe und Hoffnung gegen den Hass gewinnen.„Eines Tages, wenn das hier vorbei ist, werde ich für dich einen Flieder pflanzen. Vielleicht wird er alt und ein Baum, wie derjenige, an den du dich erinnerst.“ Für einen kurzen Moment erlaubte ich meinem Herzen, sich mit großer Freude zu füllen.
