Series Statement: Media and Religion Band 4
Content: In fashion and pop culture, one encounters religious symbols surprisingly often, be it crosses on T-shirts, depictions of Buddha on handbags or the colourful goddess Kali on swimsuits. ‘Religion’ on clothing seems to be ‘in vogue’. This book conducts a study of the reception of religious symbols in the field of popular clothing from the perspective of religious studies and tests this approach in an examination of clothing practices in the Swiss black metal scene

Content: This study complements research on the effects of visual communication by politicians by combining eye tracking and real-time response measurement. It investigates the extent to which non-verbal behaviour affects the visual attention of and (spontaneous) impression formation among viewers, while also analysing the relationship between gaze behaviour and impression formation. Participants watched videos of political speeches either with or without sound. The results show that specific non-verbal behaviour (e.g. emotional facial expressions or hand gestures) direct visual attention. Furthermore, both verbal statements and non-verbal communication affect spontaneous opinion formation about politicians. The effects of non-verbal communication occur especially if no verbal information is available. Moreover, the results indicate some relation between attention distribution and impression formation

    Uniform Title: Zootechnologien 〈English〉
Content: Swarming has become a fundamental cultural technique related to dynamic processes and an effective metaphor for the collaborative efforts of society. This book examines the media history of swarm research and its significance to current socio-technological processes. It shows that the hype about collective intelligence is based on a reciprocal computerization of biology and biologization of computer science: After decades of painstaking biological observations in the ocean, experiments in aquariums, and mathematical model-making, it was swarms-inspired computer simulation which provided biological researchers with enduring knowledge about animal collectives. At the same time, a turn to biological principles of self-organization made it possible to adapt to unclearly delineated sets of problems and clarify the operation of opaque systems - from logistics to architecture, or from crowd control to robot collectives. As Zootechnologies, swarms offer performative, synthetic, and approximate solutions in cases where analytical approaches are doomed to fail

Content: We witness an era with more screens than ever before, and within each screen, a multitude of visual varieties. Lisa Gotto investigates this medial diversity as a field of tension between large and small forms of digital image culture. This includes, on the one hand, the immersive potential of large image arrangements, such as digital 3D cinema, and, on the other hand, the compactness of mobile image forms, such as those of the smartphone film or the media practices of Instagram. Weaving together a rich variety of examples and sources, this book presents a multifaceted collection of essays that explore the transformational potential of digital media culture, contextualize its media-technical conditions, and reflect on its social consequences.

Series Statement: Connected Youth and Digital Futures
Content: An intimate look at how children network, identify, learn and grow in a connected world.Read Online at connectedyouth.nyupress.orgDo today’s youth have more opportunities than their parents? As they build their own social and digital networks, does that offer new routes to learning and friendship? How do they navigate the meaning of education in a digitally connected but fiercely competitive, highly individualized world?Based upon fieldwork at an ordinary London school, The Class examines young people's experiences of growing up and learning in a digital world. In this original and engaging study, Livingstone and Sefton-Green explore youth values, teenagers’ perspectives on their futures, and their tactics for facing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. The authors follow the students as they move across their different social worlds—in school, at home, and with their friends, engaging in a range of activities from video games to drama clubs and music lessons. By portraying the texture of the students’ everyday lives, The Class seeks to understand how the structures of social class and cultural capital shape the development of personal interests, relationships and autonomy. Providing insights into how young people’s social, digital, and learning networks enable or disempower them, Livingstone and Sefton-Green reveal that the experience of disconnections and blocked pathways is often more common than that of connections and new opportunities

Content: This collection is one of the first in-depth studies of video calling in family and domestic life. It explores the reasons that people themselves provide to explain their video calling, investigates how these reasons make that calling accountable and how, in turn, these reasons come to be things talked about in the calls themselves. The research shows how video calling is part of the currency of contemporary family affection: such calls are not just about keeping in touch, they are a way of loving too; and they are sometimes a way of fighting as well. 'Skyping' or 'Facetiming' might be frequent and can seem mundane - just a question of routine - but what they entail is a measure of important things to families

Content: Since the very beginnings of the digital humanities, Papyrology has been in the vanguard of the application of information technologies to its own scientific purposes, for both theoretical and practical reasons (the strong awareness towards the problems of human memory and the material ways of preserving it; the need to work with a multifarious and overwhelming amount of different data). After more than thirty years of development, we have now at our disposal the most advanced tools to make papyrological studies more and more effective, and even to create a new conception of "papyrology" and a new model of "edition" of the ancient documents. At this turining point, it is important to build an epistemological framework including all the different expressions of Digital Papyrology, to trace a historical sketch setting the background of the contemporary tools, and to provide a clear overview of the current theoretical and technological trends, so that all the possibilities currently available can be exploited following uniform pathways. The volume represents an innovative attempt to deal with such topics, usually relegated into very quick and general treatments within journal articles or papyrological handbooks

Series Statement: Remapping world cinema: regional tensions and global transformations
Content: Middlebrow Cinema challenges an often uninterrogated hostility to middlebrow culture that frequently dismisses it as conservative, which it often is not, and feminized or middle-class, which it often is. The volume defines the term relationally against shifting concepts of 'high' and 'low', and considers its deployment in connection with text, audience and institution. In exploring the concept of the middlebrow, this book recovers films that were widely meaningful to contemporary audiences, yet sometimes overlooked by critics interested in popular and arthouse extremes. It also addresses the question of socially-mobile audiences, who might express their aspirations through film-watching; and traces the cultural consequences of the movement of films across borders and between institutions. The first study of its kind, the volume comprises 11 original essays that test the purchase of the term 'middlebrow' across cultures, including those of Europe, Asia and the Americas, from the 1930s to the present day. Middlebrow Cinema brings into view a popular and aspirational - and thus especially relevant and dynamic - area of film and film culture. Ideal for students and researchers in this area, this book: Remaps 'Popular' and 'arthouse' approaches Explores British, Chinese, French, Indian, Mexican, Spanish 'national' cinemas alongside Continental, Hollywood, Queer, Transnational cinemas Analyses Biopic, Heritage, Historical Film, Melodrama, Musical, Sex Comedy genres

Content: Tweets, text messages, Facebook status updates, or microblog entries: the process of announcing news and sharing knowledge seems to be getting shorter and shorter. This volume relates the current trend of abbreviation to its antecedents, showing that the use of brevity existed long before the digital age. The career of the short form is closely connected to the cultural achievements of the 17th century, and skyrocketed in the run up to the formation of professional media networks in the 19th century. Since then, anecdotes, case studies, brief messages, the 'miscellaneous', headlines, and tidbits from 'around the world' have formed essential elements of the organization and communication of modern forms of knowledge
