Content: The relationship between matters of identity and complex global transformations have rarely been as controversial as during the second decade of the 21st century. Clarifications on identity matters have been and remain at the core of multiple crises in the process of European integration. At the same time, the EU has been challenged to develop and implement more robust strategic thinking, and many debates continue in new forms in this respect. Content: Around 14 million people in Germany regularly play music in their spare time. Many of them are members of wind orchestras or brass bands, who thus make an important contribution to regional (music) culture. However, what are their incentives in this respect? In an online survey of 214 amateur musicians and 123 amateur football players in Hesse, Jennifer Nowak addresses this question in depth. She highlights selected concepts in motivational psychology and subsequently presents the results of her online survey in terms of incentives, personality and flow state. Both the hypotheses she derives from these results plus a blueprint she suggests for encouraging playing music in one’s spare time reveal relevant findings for theory and practice in this regard

Content: Die vorliegende Studie ergänzt den Forschungsstand zur Wirkung visueller Kommunikation politischer Akteure durch eine innovative Methodenkombination aus Eye-Tracking und Real-Time-Response-Messung. Die Studie untersucht, inwiefern nonverbales Verhalten sowohl die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit als auch die (spontanen) Urteile von RezipientInnen beeinflusst. Außerdem wird der Zusammenhang aus Blickverhalten und Urteilsbildung analysiert. Dazu sahen TeilnehmerInnen der Studie Videos von Politikerreden entweder mit oder ohne Ton. Befunde zeigen, dass spezifisches körpersprachliches Verhalten (z.B. emotionale Gesichtsausdrücke oder Handgesten) zum einen die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit lenkt. Zum anderen haben sowohl verbale Äußerungen als auch nonverbales Verhalten Auswirkungen auf die spontane Urteilsbildung über Politiker. Content: This study complements research on the effects of visual communication by politicians by combining eye tracking and real-time response measurement. It investigates the extent to which non-verbal behaviour affects the visual attention of and (spontaneous) impression formation among viewers, while also analysing the relationship between gaze behaviour and impression formation. Participants watched videos of political speeches either with or without sound. The results show that specific non-verbal behaviour (e.g. emotional facial expressions or hand gestures) direct visual attention. Furthermore, both verbal statements and non-verbal communication affect spontaneous opinion formation about politicians. The effects of non-verbal communication occur especially if no verbal information is available. Moreover, the results indicate some relation between attention distribution and impression formation

Content: Painting is a process. Canvases are cut, stretched, primed, and painted in several layers. Conservators intervene to preserve artworks. Each step of this process occurs on the material ground of painting. The term ‘ground’ therefore includes different meanings: the material, the priming as well as the composition of foreground, middle-, and background. In the 19th century, the understanding of ‘ground’ changed. Veronica Peselmann examines the conceptual and terminological understanding of ‘ground’ in that time. She presents ‘ground’ as a key term for painting, illustrated with examples from Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet
