Content: Chancellors and foreign ministers have had a formative influence on German foreign policy. Adenauer’s ‘policy of Western integration’ or Brandt’s ‘new Eastern policy’ are cases in point. This volume discusses which leadership traits and political beliefs have guided the actions of German decision makers from 1949 until today. For that purpose, we employ analytical schemes through which the individual characteristics and idiosyncrasies of German decision makers can be identified based on automated coding. Empirical studies, for instance on the consequences of ‘external shocks’ or war experiences on the traits and beliefs of German foreign policy decision makers, illustrate the added value of this actor-specific approach to German foreign policy

Content: This study complements research on the effects of visual communication by politicians by combining eye tracking and real-time response measurement. It investigates the extent to which non-verbal behaviour affects the visual attention of and (spontaneous) impression formation among viewers, while also analysing the relationship between gaze behaviour and impression formation. Participants watched videos of political speeches either with or without sound. The results show that specific non-verbal behaviour (e.g. emotional facial expressions or hand gestures) direct visual attention. Furthermore, both verbal statements and non-verbal communication affect spontaneous opinion formation about politicians. The effects of non-verbal communication occur especially if no verbal information is available. Moreover, the results indicate some relation between attention distribution and impression formation

Content: Is negative campaigning in German politics a myth? In this book, Susanne Thelen tries to find an answer to this question while analysing the 2017 German federal election, especially the parties’ manifestos, their Twitter and Facebook activities as well as the television debate between Chancellor Angela Markel and her challenger Martin Schulz. For most people, negative campaigning simply involves one person attacking another’s character through ‘below-the-belt’ comments. But negative campaigning can be defined as any true or untrue criticism levelled by one party or candidate against another during a campaign. Attacks can be implicit or explicit; they can be direct or comparative, but they must at least address the opponent in some way. Thelen distinguishes between attacks on personality traits and those on issues. Moreover, she develops a third category relating to nationality, religion and law and order: attacks on values. Thelen provides an overview of negative highlights in previous federal elections in Germany and she compares German strategies with the negativity we experienced during the 2016 US presidential election

Content: The Western Balkans and the Visegrad Group are two macro-regions within the larger Eastern European area. Geographically and historically close, both regions share comparable characteristics on a macro-regional level as well as among the region's individual countries on a national level. However, when it comes to identities, the national level seems unavoidable: politically speaking, identity means national identity first and foremost. The authors of this book, who come from both regions, examine the ways in which the very sense of regional belonging might—or might not—override the shortcomings of and the obstacles erected by national identity. The varied case studies in the book focus on aspects of identity and their political (mis)use by actors in the regions under study.
Content: Is populism "the ideology of democracy" (Margaret Canovan), a danger to democracy that entails "a claim to exclusive moral representation" (Jan-Werner Müller), or rather a "series of discursive resources which can be put to very different uses" (Ernesto Laclau)? This is the first German-language edited volume bringing together discursive approaches to populism in a broad sense. The book features conceptually sound as well as empirically nuanced analyses of populist discourses in the context of different states, public spheres as well as political parties and movements. It presents a wide range of theoretical positions on the democratic and authoritarian uses of populism and develops them in the form of country case studies. With contributions by Aristotelis Agridopoulos, Bianca de Freitas Linhares, Paolo Gerbaudo, Ybiskay González Torres, Marius Hildebrand, Seongcheol Kim, Jürgen Link, Conrad Lluis, Daniel de Mendonça, Jan-Werner Müller, Yannis Stavrakakis, Liv Sunnercrantz and Thomás Zicman de Barros
