Elisabeth von Nassau-Saarbrücken (nach 1393 - 1456) ist die Tochter Herzog Friedrichs V. von Lothringen und Margarethes von Vaudémont und Joinville. Sie heiratete 1412 Philipp I. von Nassau-Saarbrücken. Nach dessen Tod 1429 regierte Elisabeth die Grafschaft, die schließlich von ihren Söhnen Philipp II. (1438) und Johann III. (1442) verwaltet wurde. Elisabeth übersetzte vier französische Chansons de geste ins Deutsche. Ihre Autorschaft ist gesichert für die Prosaübertragungen des 'Loher und Maller' und des 'Huge Scheppel'. Daß Elisabeth auch den 'Herpin' bzw. die 'Sibille' in deutsche Prosa brachte, kann mit stilistischen und überlieferungsgeschichtlichen Kriterien deutlich gemacht werden. Schon die Texte der altfranzösischen Vorlage bilden eine genealogisch zusammenhängende Einheit. Elisabeths Mutter ließ 1405 eine Abschrift dieser Chansons anfertigen, die Elisabeth in den dreißiger Jahren übersetzte. Als letztes Werk dieser Reihe gilt die Übertragung der Chanson de geste 'Hugues Capet', die Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts entstanden ist. Elisabeths erfolgreichster Text erzäht die Geschichte von Huge Scheppel, dem Sohn eines Adligen und einer Metzgerstochter, der nach zahlreichen Abenteuern die Tochter Ludwigs, des Sohns Karls des Großen, zur Frau gewinnt. Mit Hilfe der Pariser Bürger gelingt es Huge, die königliche Macht zu übernehmen. Der 'Huge Scheppel' ist als erster der genannten Romane gedruckt worden. Hans Sachs fertigte 1556 eine Dramatisierung an.
