Lower caste and originally a long shot in the competition, America Singer returns as one of four Elite girls vying for Prince Maxon’s heart and the title of princess of Illea. America is as willful and defiant as ever, making her both a target of King Clarkson’s wrath and the darling of the people of Illea. She and Maxon continue to butt heads even as the chemistry between them remains palpable. The challenges facing the couple are unrelenting: brutal attacks by rebels, new political allies with a clear preference in who is chosen as princess, and ever-tangled relationships with America’s fellow Selected girls. America has the right mix of sass and heart, and her over-the-top royal treatment is enough to make any reader who has ever played dress-up envious. Cass wisely keeps the Selection decision uncertain until the very end, keeping readers on the edge of their seats to find out who Maxon will finally choose as his bride. Ages 13–up. Agent: Elana Roth, Red Tree Literary. "

At first I wasn', sure what to think, because the series had seemed so resolved, but once I got over the initial shock, I was obsessed! I was on my toes, searching for the release date of the next two books every other day! When it finally came out, I had just spent all my money at the book fair. Inhalt: "From the New York Times bestselling author of The Selection series comes this sweeping standalone fantasy romance. A girl with a secret. The boy of her dreams. An ocean between them. Throughout the ages, the Ocean has occasionally rescued young women from drowning. To repay their debt, these young women must serve for 100 years as Sirens, remaining young and beautiful and using their deadly voices to lure strangers into watery graves. To keep their true nature secret, Sirens must never speak to humans, and must be careful never to stay in the same place for too long. But once her century of service is over, each Siren gets a chance to start over – a chance to live the mortal life that was almost stolen from her. Kahlen became a Siren after her family died in a terrible shipwreck, decades ago. And though a single word from her can kill, she can't resist spending her days on land, watching ordinary people and longing for the day when she will be able to speak and laugh and live freely among them again. Kahlen is resigned to finishing her sentence in solitude...until she meets Akinli. Handsome, caring, and kind, Akinli is everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. And though she can't talk to him, they soon forge a connection neither of them can deny... and Kahlen doesn't want to. Falling in love with a human breaks all of the Ocean's rules, and if the Ocean discovers Kahlen's feelings, she'll be forced to leave Akinli for good. But for the first time in a lifetime of following the rules, Kahlen is determined to follow her heart."

Having captured the heart of the handsome young Coroan king, Jameson, Hollis suddenly faces the very real prospect of being Coroa’s next queen, despite her family’s inferior social standing and her own lack of political interest. Jameson is smitten with Hollis’s honest stories and optimism, but the Coroan nobility is not. When the Eastoffe family arrives seeking asylum from the neighboring rival nation of Isolte, Hollis is captivated by the oldest son, Silas, and questions both her feelings for Jameson and her desire to be queen. Cass’s trademark love triangle is set against the fictitious 16th-century kingdom of Coroa and its elaborate customs, and the threat posed by the insidious Isolte king adds some needed danger. Though Hollis begins with an unfortunate deference toward Jameson that at first makes her seem timid, she has found both her voice and her spine by the end of this duology opener, becoming a headstrong heroine whom Cass’s loyal following will champion. Lady Hollis learns to listen to her heart rather than judging others based on their social standing. Narrator Jasika Nicole's caring presentation ensures that both blossoming love and difficult choices feel authentic to the characters. However, the flow of the story is sometimes slowed by her pace. Additionally, her narration sometimes makes Lady Hollis sound childish. She does do a nice job contrasting the Brite family's upper-crust characteristics and Silas's working-class demeanor. Seamlessly transitioning between high-society snobbery and lower-class cheer, Nicole delivers likable voices that enhance this story's unpredictable charm. J.O. AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine"

VERDICT A satisfying sequel for fans of the first book.-Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton H.S., Linden, MI Copyright 2021 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. " Rezension(11): "〈a href=http://www.kirkusreviews.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/kirkus_logo.png alt=Kirkus border=0 /〉〈/a〉: June 1, 2021 Lady Hollis flees her country after her new husband is killed. In The Betrothed (2020), Hollis fell in love with Silas, the son of an Isolten family who sought asylum from their cruel king, and chose him over her intended match, King Jameson. Since Silas, his father, his brothers, and her parents have been killed, she decides to travel to Isolte with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. Formerly primarily interested in dresses, dancing, and romance, Hollis now proves her mettle. Etan, Silas' cousin, arrives to escort the family, and he clashes with Hollis from the moment they meet. The society they live in, modeled after medieval Europe, with castles, tournaments, kings, queens, and nobles, generally follows traditional gender roles, but Hollis sometimes breaks through the accepted boundaries. When Etan wants to lead a revolt against his own King Quinten, who is just one of the novel's major betrayers, Hollis uses her wits to get the evidence needed to convince others that he is guilty of crimes against his own people. She bravely returns to Coroa to confront King Jameson when she finds out that he, too, has carried out unspeakable crimes. Hollis and Etan's verbal wars are fun, predictably leading to love, but the political intrigue sometimes drags the novel down. Characters default to White. Fans of the previous entry will enjoy following the story of a young woman who changes the fates of two countries. (Historical romance. 13-16) COPYRIGHT(2021) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. "

While she enjoys his company, her true love is a commoner named Silas Eastsoffe who comes to Coroa with his family. Silas and Hollis hit it off romantically from the beginning. The action in the story is slow at first with a lot of pages devoted to developing the characters and setting. This pacing helps the story feel regal and devoted to the courtship between Hollis and Jameson. There is no doubt that Jameson intends to make Hollis his queen, even though her heart is drawn to Silas. The action comes later, delivering a cliffhanger as Hollis leaves to question the ruler of another kingdom. Like Cass's previous female protagonists, Hollis is a strong character, and proves to be a good role model with little fear who knows what she wants to accomplish. VERDICT Fans of The Selection series will anxiously await the second installment of this duology to learn Hollis's fate.- Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MICopyright 2020 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. The independent teenager makes Jameson laugh, but she lacks the education and demeanor people expect in a queen. Her friend Delia Grace has more knowledge of history and languages but is shunned due to her illegitimate birth. Hollis gets caught up in a whirl of social activity, especially following an Isolten royal visit. There has been bad blood between the two countries, not fully explained here, and when an exiled Isolten family also comes to court, Jameson generously allows them to stay. Hollis relies on the family to teach her about Isolten customs and secretly falls in love with Silas, the oldest son, even though a relationship with him would mean relinquishing Jameson and the throne. When Hollis learns of political machinations that will affect her future in ways that she abhors, she faces a difficult decision. Romance readers will enjoy the usual descriptions of dresses, jewelry, young love, and discreet kisses, although many characters remain cardboard figures. While the violent climax may be upsetting, the book ends on a hopeful note. Themes related to immigration and young women's taking charge of their lives don't quite lift this awkwardly written volume above other royal romances. There are prejudicial references to Romani people, and whiteness is situated as the norm. Skip this uninspired entry into the world of medieval love and court intrigue. When Lady Hollis Brite wins the enviable affection of King Jameson, she believes she's been bestowed with everything any girl in Coroa could ever hope for. But Hollis quickly learns that sometimes being queen only earns one a title and status as the king's ornament, and that an opportune encounter with a handsome foreigner can pave her way to a drastically different future. Cass marks her return with the lure of royal conventions and a character who is charming in her naivete regarding ladylike etiquette. Establishing the authenticity of the sixteenth-century setting through appropriate vernacular is crucial in a period-based novel, so the ill-timed use of contractions creates a flimsy sense of place. Hollis' lack of emotional range as the story progresses is saved by her resilient disposition and humanizing early faux pas.
