Content: Critical tradition has established a certain way of reading Ezra Pound, one that places the meanings of the words on the page at the centre of interest and neglects poetic communication. The present study contributes to the recent challenge to this critical orthodoxy, which has led to his canonization as a 'difficult' poet, by investigating the pragmatic dimension of Pound's work. In its effort to reconstruct the dynamic communicative interface of Pound and his audiences in the early period of his career (1908-1925), this study draws on relevance theory, a recent sharpening in pragmatic theory, not so much to produce a 'new' reading of his poetry, but to suggest how Pound became difficult: it is argued that the relative success and failure of his poetry to enhance cognitive and civic renewal depended on the dialectic between his presumptions of audience and the interpretive expectations and skills of his actual historical readers.

Content: "While critics have pointed to the exclusionary canonization of avant-garde productions, there has not been any comprehensive study of the racialized metaphysical ownership of renewal. This book studies the terms of narration through which white US-American writers claim futurity, movement forward, and transformative potential as strictly white property while they reword such anti-Black transgressions as progessive and emancipatory politics."

Content: Challenging the 'success story' of curiosity from original sin to intellectual virtue, this study uses an innovative methodological approach to the history of ideas as a non-teleological neural network based on current research in information technology and neurophysiology. The network offers a dynamic alternative to the 'development' of curiosity within the progress-oriented mythology of the Enlightenment, emphasizing the oscillation and interaction of ideas within the processes of their construction, as well as exposing the power relations behind them. The text corpus focuses on enactments of curiosity in English literature of the 'Long' Eighteenth Century (c. 1680-1818), such as transgression of boundaries, breach of taboo, gendered curiosity, sensationalism, or academic endeavour, bringing together a variety of examples from all major genres. The Age of Curiosity contributes to current debates on a post-Foucauldian renewal of Lovejoy's history of ideas in Enlightenment studies, exploring both curiosity as an indispensable trait for the search of answers to the fundamental yet unresolved questions of 'identity' or 'truth', and its potential as cura, the care for others and the world

Content: Interested in the ideological workings of fiction, I study how major avant-garde tropes promote the potential of permanent renewal as white America’s property. Renewal ties to the capacities to create, progress, transcend, and simply be. From Black critique we know that, within dominant discourse, all these capacities have been denied to Black bodies ever since colonization. Black work has been fetishized, appropriated, stolen, and dismissed in and by dominant culture, while Black being is construed as negativity and barred on the level of ontology. It follows then that racialization operates on multiple levels in the conceptual frame of renewal. I study this conceptualization by re-reading the works of and criticism on progressive white authors. I examine how images of renewal enable the claim on futurity, transformative potential, and movement forward as exclusively white properties. Premised on oppositions between positive capacities and a state of complete incapacitation, these images are often viewed as separate constructions. This project shows that, deriving from white ideology, such representations are symbiotic and simultaneous - the "good" story of white renewal rests on the continual transgression towards Black being

Content: This research at the crossroads of history, political science and litterature aims to show how the NRF can be regarded as an institution and a place of renewal of elites if we consider its evolution on a long time, from 1908 until 1968. Throughout the history of the magazine over sixty years, this thesis is testing the validity of the concepts of generation, background and intellectual sociability by showing how the first generation of the founders, in a context characterized by the decline of religion practice and the advent of modernity after the upheavals of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, developed a new design novel based both on a renewed classicism and on the desire to promote the psychological introspection through the novel revival. The study then seeks to show how the NRF, through the upheavals and tragedies of the twentieth century, integrates new generations of authors while sometimes violently opposing them. Through these oppositions, we perceive more and more the invasion of the literary field by politics and ideology. The will of the creators of the NRF to promote litterature freed from political and partisan considerations is itself more seriously challenged during the interwar period to be denied under the direction of Pierre Drieu La Rochelle during the occupation. The NNRF reborn in 1953 chose to return to classicism aesthetic early but never got back the place it occupied before the war
