Recent Developments and Trends in Japanese Foreign Policy 2017/2018: Global Japan with Many Problems The most important issue regarding Japan’s foreign and security policy in 2018 and 2019 was the Japanese presidency of the G20 and the G20 summit meeting in Osaka. While Japan managed to organize a rather successful summit, there were also many bilateral conflicts involving Japan that overshadowed this event. For example, Japan stumbled into an escalating conflict with South Korea, heavily misjudged the Russian position regarding the conclusion of a peace treaty between both countries and could not find a solution to the trade conflict with the US. Nonetheless, the Abe administration tried to proceed with its plan to overcome the post-war order in East Asia and to establish Japan as an independent and significant actor on the global stage.
