Es steht Wehler drauf, und es ist Wehler drin. Das Konzept der vorhergehenden Bände wird beibehalten, wenngleich mit der bereits des Öfteren kritisierten Verschiebung zugunsten des Primats der Politik in einigen Kapiteln. Im Vorwort verteidigt der Autor erneut seinen Ansatz: Gegenüber den eingeforderten Konzessionen an eine neue Kulturgeschichte weist er zum Beispiel darauf hin, dass eine Analyse struktureller Faktoren notwendig sei, bevor an eine mentalitätsgeschichtliche Auswertung gedacht werden könne. Das ist nachzuvollziehen, und Wehlers „Deutsche Gesellschaftsgeschichte“ liefert diese Strukturanalyse gesellschaftlicher Existenzbedingungen. Die Bevölkerungsentwicklung, die wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen, die Schichtung und die kulturellen Institutionen ebenso wie das politische System bilden die Grundlagen gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens. Der Vorteil und die Tragfähigkeit dieses Ansatzes kommen an vielen Stellen zum Ausdruck und geraten zum analytischen Vorzug dieses Werkes gegenüber anders konzipierten Handbüchern. Mentalitätsgeschichte zu schreiben böte sich auf dieser Grundlage an, erforderte aber zweifellos einen eigenen Band und ist zudem nicht Wehlers Sache.
